Best Family Journaling Apps: Purpose-Built vs Traditional

Andrew Ronald
Simirity Founder

Families don’t journal the same way individuals do. When you want to make journaling a shared family experience rather than a private diary, you need a platform designed for multiple voices and generations.

Purpose-built journaling apps for families bridge this gap by creating dedicated spaces for multi-generational sharing. Unlike traditional journals, family-focused platforms can inspire a diverse range of stories, connect family members in storytelling, and offer flexible tools that share stories with future generations.

The best family journal apps in 2025 are proving that digital doesn’t mean impersonal—it means more connected, more secure, and more likely to help families truly understand each other. Ready to discover which journaling platform could upgrade the way your family shares stories?

Why Families Turn to Digital Journaling Apps

Digital journaling offers something paper journals can’t: the ability to create shared family stories that unite family members of all ages.

The way to journal as a family differs fundamentally from journaling as an individual. Feeling connected to family happens through storytelling, not status updates, brief message exchanges or sharing photos. Unlike social media platforms designed for broad audiences, family journal apps provide an intimate space where authentic stories can be shared safely—no algorithms, no ads, just genuine connection with the people you love.

Modern families face practical challenges too: busy schedules and geographic distance mean family gatherings happen infrequently. But meaningful stories can be shared continuously through dedicated family platforms — creating structured opportunities for deep conversations, rather than hoping they’ll happen during brief catch-up calls.

Key Features For Great Family Journals

Choosing a family journal app requires different criteria than selecting a personal journaling platform. While individual apps focus on private reflection, family-oriented platforms must excel at sharing, collaboration, and long-term accessibility.

Here are four essential journaling features we believe every family should have:

1. Privacy and security features

Family stories need more than basic password protection. The best journalling apps offer granular privacy controls that let you decide exactly who sees each story—entire extended family, just parents and children, or only between siblings.

Unlike many social media platforms, the best family journal apps ensure no data mining, no targeted advertising based on your stories, and no algorithms controlling what family members see. Your family stories remain private, secure, and entirely under your control.

2. Family-friendly journal prompts

Traditional journalling prompts focus on personal reflection, but family prompts serve a different purpose—they’re designed to spark shareable stories across generations. They explore topics including childhood memories, family recipes, travel adventures, health challenges and real-life lessons learned.

Such prompts are designed to help family members discover aspects of their lives worth documenting and sharing, creating content that can strengthen family bonds and become a priceless family legacy.

Prompts for individuals

Examples commonly found in many journals

  • What are three things you’re grateful for today?
  • What was the highlight of your day?
  • What’s on your mind right now?
  • What’s one goal you want to focus on this week?
  • What would make tomorrow better than today?
Example family tradition of spending time together by a fire.

Prompts for families

Examples that capture personalities, experiences, values & learnings.

  • Which childhood trips still hold significance for you?
  • What would shock today’s students about your education?
  • What do you miss most about the past?
  • When have you felt really outside your comfort zone?
  • What was your entry to parenthood actually like?

3. Ensure no detail gets lost

Family stories deserve more than basic text entries. The best platforms let you combine photos, videos, voice recordings, location details, and written context within a single story, ensuring that cherished family moments are captured with all their details intact.

Simple stories might need only a photo and caption, but significant family memories can include every element necessary to preserve their full impact for future generations.

Imagine a digital scrapbook, blending words with photos, videos, voice recordings and more.

4. Organisation and multi-generational access

With a multitude of family members sharing stories over the years, smart organisation becomes crucial. Advanced search, intuitive tagging, and filtering options make it easy to rediscover treasured memories as your family archive grows.

Equally important is accommodating the needs of everyone, from young children to grandparents. Audio recording capabilities, administrative support for less tech-savvy relatives, co-authoring options, and memorial profiles ensure every generation can participate meaningfully in your family’s ongoing story.

Best Family Journaling Apps Compared

With dozens of journal apps available, choosing the right platform for your family requires understanding what each does well—and more importantly, what they don’t.

Simirity: built specifically for families

Unlike individual journaling apps, Simirity was created by our family to solve real challenges: ageing parents with stories to preserve, children disconnected from extended family, and the struggle to move beyond surface-level family conversations.

What sets Simirity apart from the journaling apps that follow:

  • Family-focused prompts that spark meaningful conversations rather than private reflection.
  • Story-level privacy controls so you control exactly who sees each story.
  • Profiles for everyone, from children to ancestors—filled with details that capture their character.
  • Family admin and co-authoring options to ensure that everyone’s story can be told.
  • A life lessons archive to preserve family wisdom and help family members in times of need.
  • Ready to welcome future family, giving them access to relevant historical family stories.

The result isn’t just another way to journal—it’s a platform that helps families rediscover each other through storytelling whilst building lasting archives of wisdom and memories.

Day One & Journey: individual focus apps with shared journal option

Both Day One and Journey offer excellent individual journaling experiences.

Day One excels at habit-building with daily prompts and polished design, while Journey provides eBook exports and self-hosting options. However, both approach family sharing as an extension of individual journaling rather than designing specifically for family dynamics.

Here are a few limitations they share with regards family journaling:

  • Limited family sharing controls: While both offer shared journals, you can’t customise access story-by-story, making it difficult to share different memories with different family members.
  • Individual-focused organisation: Both create well-organised archives of personal entries but lack family profiles or dedicated spaces for accessing family wisdom when guidance is needed.
  • Personal rather than family prompts: Questions centre on individual experiences (“How are you feeling today?”) rather than shareable family stories (“What turning points brought you to where you stand today?”).
  • Habit-focused rather than story-focused: The apps both excel at building daily journaling habits, but family storytelling isn’t about daily entries. Families don’t need to journal every day—it’s about capturing selected moments and insights that your family will enjoy looking back on in future years.

Both apps are excellent for personal journaling, but depending on your goals for family journaling, they might not be enough.

They both have free versions with paid upgrades, so try them out and imagine how your family might use them.

Turn everyday moments into lifelong memories in Simirity

Why we built Simirity

I have used Day One since 2016 to capture my own thoughts and ideas, and I really enjoyed the experience. However, its lack of family-centric features meant I didn’t want to adopt it for preserving our family stories. I wanted something more than just a big archive of journal entries—I believed that stories had the power to help our family grow closer and feel more connected in daily life.

That’s why we created the Simirity app—because no existing platform met our family’s actual needs for genuine connection and shared storytelling.

Here’s our family’s story.

Our family on a wet and windy summer holiday

3 Ways Digital Journaling Transformed Family Life

When we created Simirity, our motivation was simple: capture our family stories before they’re forgotten and strengthen family bonds through genuine storytelling.

— Andrew Ronald, Founder

Here’s what happened:

1. From routine conversations to meaningful connection

We used to discuss the same topics during family calls—what everyone had been doing, the weather, and so on. By exploring Simirity’s diverse journal prompts, we discovered so many interesting aspects about each other that we’d never taken the time to discuss. I felt rather bad at how little I knew about my parents’ and grandparents’ lives, and was relieved to finally preserve these stories for my children.

Our regular calls now include topics inspired by shared stories rather than just catching up on recent news. It’s the difference between ‘staying in touch’ and genuinely knowing what’s going on in each other’s lives.

2. Children connected to their heritage

My fear of losing precious family stories has disappeared. We’re capturing memories that existed only in ageing minds—not just events, but the emotions and meaning behind them. Our children now understand their grandparents’, aunt’s, and cousins’ better than ever before—and on those rare occasions where they get to meet them, it really shows.

As stories across generations accumulate, you get this feeling that you’re just one link in a long family chain. Simirity makes everyone, especially children, feel part of something far greater than themselves.

3. A living archive that enriches daily life

Perhaps most importantly, we’ve achieved something far more valuable than a digital journal: a repository of tried-and-tested family wisdom. Real-world stories that impart genuine insights our children and future generations can learn from, covering topics from bullying to marriage and parenting. As the youngsters in our family face new challenges, we hope they’ll look to their family for help rather than some sensationalist YouTuber.

And the story anniversary feature became our family favourite—like Google Photos reminders, but instead of just showing old pictures, family stories resurface naturally in daily life.

In the past, we created photo books and similar items to capture our family history, but they just sat there gathering dust. In a world where the news is not always pleasant, receiving nostalgic reminders of previous family moments brings us genuine joy each day.

The transformation

The result is closer family connections despite living apart, preserved stories that would otherwise be lost, and engaging conversations that we’ll treasure forever. Instead of hoping meaningful discussions happen, Simirity’s given us a way to ensure they occur naturally.

We wish the same for you and your family.
