Why is Family Life so Precious?

Insight 1 – Family is a dependable pillar in our lives

Without my family, I’d feel vulnerable and alone facing life’s challenges.

With them, it feels like anything’s possible, and whatever happens, I’ll always have people to support and love me unconditionally.

Many people have two or three pillars in their lives:

  • Their family.
  • Their working life and the people they work with.
  • Their passions and interests with friends and fellow enthusiasts.

Having several pillars, ideally three or more, means if one comes crashing down you are steadied by the other two. So if you lose your job, your family and friends can support you. These pillars add stability to your life.

If I objectively compare the support and dependability of these pillars in my life, my family is without any shadow of a doubt, the main pillar in my life. And that’s how it is for most of us family folk.

It’s not that our colleagues and friends are bad choices – they can be great people! It’s that family means so much more.

"Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family."

Anthony Brandt
  • "The only rock I know that stays steady, the only institution I know that works, is the family."

    — Lee Iacocca
  • “If you are too busy to enjoy quality time with your family, then you need to re-evaluate your priorities.”

    — Dave Willis

Insight 2 – A happy family life is a life well-lived

Families provide all the ingredients for a life well lived.

Their unconditional love forever supports us, encourages us to push ourselves and celebrates our successes. They are a community we feel strongly connected to, with whom we can share our thoughts, feelings and experiences. They give our lives a true purpose, with the impact being felt beyond our own lives.

Of course, family isn’t essential for a live well lived. I just wouldn’t want to try it any other way.

”When you look at your life, the greatest happinesses are family happinesses."

Joyce Brothers
  • “The informality of family life is a blessed condition that allows us all to become our best while looking our worst.”

    — Marge Kennedy
  • "It's always nice to have someone in your life who can make you smile even when they're not around."

    — Unknown
  • “Many men can make a fortune but very few can build a family.”

    — J.S. Bryan
  • “What you leave as a legacy is not what is etched in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others."

How Can I Create A Thriving Family Life?

Insight 3 – A thriving family life requires time, effort and love

There’s a big difference between having children and raising children.

The saying ‘the more you put in, the more you get out’ definitely applies to family life. The innumerable benefits of a thriving family life require time, effort and love.

We know life’s busy… But you’re not alone in this! Invest in your family, as a family. Encourage everyone to do their bit – involving grandparents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles.  Invest in family board games, spend time together and talk about interesting topics to really get to know each other.

The secret is to start small and slowly add family events to your weekly calendar.

“In family relationships, ‘love’ is really spelled ‘t-i-m-e,’ time. Taking time for each other is the key for harmony at home.”

Dieter F. Uchtdor
  • “In truth, a family is what you make it. It is made strong, not by number of heads counted at the dinner table, but by the rituals you help family members create, by the memories you share, by the commitment of time, caring, and love you show to one another, and by the hopes for the future you have as individuals and as a unit.”

    — Marge Kennedy
  • “In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.”

    — Friedrich Nietzsche
  • “Family: where life begins and love never ends.”

    — Anonymous

How Can I Enjoy Family Life to The Full?

Insight 4 – Take joy in the little things

Thinking back to our children’s younger years, it’s not the big milestones I miss the most, but those simple moments we shared that they grew out of.

  • Feeding them with the baby bottle as I read them a story.
  • Cuddles after bath time as I dried them off.
  • Laughing faces, covered in yoghurt as I fed them.

If I could revisit the past, it’s these simple moments I’d go back to. I call them my ‘million dollar moments’ – the price I’d gladly pay to relive them in my retirement (if I had the money).

The lesson is to take joy in the little things that happen each day.

These days, I love hearing them talk about how school went. I love our bedtime Harry Potter book reading sessions and our weekend walks where I get to hear all about Minecraft… I try to remind myself that these moments too will past, so be present and enjoy them to the full.

"Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments."

Rose Kennedy
  • "I wish I had not been in a hurry to get on to the next things: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less."

    — Anna Quindlen

Insight 5 – Know that family life is constantly evolving

‘Family’ means different things at different stages of life.

  • In our childhood years, it’s more about parents, siblings and grandparents.
  • As parents with ageing parents of our own, we look down on our children, up to our parents, and across to our siblings and their families.
  • As adults with grandchildren of our own, I can imagine it feels wonderful to be able to contribute to all these family members at different stages of their life.

Know that family is always in flux and focus on enjoying whatever phase you are at today. Don’t wish for the past or yearn for the future.

Enjoy family life as it is today. Soon it will change.

"You can have it all. You just can't have it all at once."

Oprah Winfrey
  • “Families are like branches on a tree. We grow in different directions, yet our roots remain as one.”

    — Unknown
  • “Family is not something supposed to be static or set. People may marry in or divorce out. They’re born, and they die. It’s always evolving, turning into something else.”

    — Saying
  • “The family you come from isn’t as important as the family you’re going to have.”

    — Ring Lardner

How Simirity App Helps Build a Thriving Family Life

Simirity is a family business, and like you, we want to make the most of our time together.

On our family holiday.

Our passion is helping families thrive – ours and yours alike.

We built the Simirity App to help.

Simirity App is a private storytelling app that unites your extended family in stories, even if you live apart.

Over time, your entire family can build an archive of digital stories, filled with memorable photos, videos and audio, that share your experiences with young generations.

Here’s how it can help your family life thrive:

  1. We want to be a part of our extended family’s lives, but it’s hard when we live apart. Live alongside your parents and your siblings’ families by regularly sharing authentic stories about your lives. Something more than just sharing photos, writing a message or a weekly video call. Share the ups and the downs, your thoughts, your memories, your challenges, your aspirations. If you don’t know what’s going on in your family’s lives, how can you support one another or celebrate their successes?
  2. Capture and preserve stories about your family life, before they get forgotten. From the simple pleasures of bedtime book reading to school graduation ceremonies, family weddings and the arrival of new generations. Save these stories so you and your whole family can look back on them. And preserve them as a family legacy that welcomes future generations and gives them that feeling of being a part of something bigger than themselves.
  3. Keep ‘family’ central in everyone’s mind with story anniversary notifications. These notifications remind you and your whole family what your parents did 60 years ago, what you did 20 years ago, and what your children did last year. This way, family members, dead and alive, those within your four walls and outside, are all woven into your daily life.
